Company News Releases
February 6, 2004... Hyundai’s HCD8 concept car caused heads to turn at this year’s North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit with its innovative lighting concept. With exterior lighting fully equipped with various LEDs from Osram Opto Semiconductors, the concept car demonstrates the enormous potential of these tiny light sources.

The exterior lighting for the sports coupé is based exclusively on the latest generation of high-brightness LEDs from Osram Opto Semiconductors. This is made possible by the Regensburg company's comprehensive product range. The show car provides the ideal opportunity to demonstrate the benefits of high-brightness LEDs such as Golden Dragon and Advanced Power TOPLED and the miniaturised SmartLEDs for the automotive sector. All these LEDs belong to the SMT series and are suitable for standard soldering processes. The chips and packages have been closely matched to one another to produce high-performance components with high luminous output, small package dimensions and good thermal dissipation properties. |
“The 'Hyundai HCD8' concept vehicle provides the perfect showcase for OSRAM Opto Semiconductors as one of the few companies that can provide a full SMT product portfolio,” said Tom Shottes, Vice President of North American LED Products.
White Golden Dragon LEDs demonstrate their versatility and performance as light sources for high-beam and dipped beam headlights, fog lights and reversing lights. Yellow Golden Dragon LEDs are used in the indicators. The tail lights and brake lights are equipped with Advanced Power TOPLEDs. Miniaturised SmartLEDs show their strengths in the third brake light. Efficient chip design and high-performance optics enable the package dimensions to be kept very small and heat dissipation to be highly effective. The SmartLEDs are integrated unobtrusively in the tailgate but provide an unmistakable signal when the car is braking.
