RF Micro Devices Adds New Member to Board of Directors

RF Micro Devices, Inc., a leading provider of proprietary radio frequency integrated circuits (RFICs) for wireless communications applications, today announced that Frederick J. Leonberger has been named a member of the board of directors.
Dr. Leonberger was nominated and confirmed by the board as a new director at a September 12, 2002 board meeting. His appointment is effective immediately.
Dr. Leonberger is senior vice president and chief technology officer of JDS Uniphase Corporation, a leading supplier of optical components and modules to the communications industry. He is responsible for technology strategy and is very involved in mergers and acquisitions, research and development and the intellectual property activities of JDS Uniphase. He has served in this position since the merger of Uniphase Corporation and JDS Fitel, which formed JDS Uniphase in July 1999. Previously, he was senior vice president and chief technology officer of Uniphase and was responsible for the company's strategic technology directions and the coordination of its technology and product development activities. Dr. Leonberger joined Uniphase upon its acquisition of United Technologies Photonics (UTP) in 1995. He was a co-founder of UTP and served as its general manager from 1992 to 1995. From 1984 to 1991 he was manager of photonics and applied physics at the United Technologies Research Center, and from 1975 to 1984 he was with MIT Lincoln Laboratory, first as a staff member and later as a group leader.
Dr. Leonberger received a B.S.E. degree from the University of Michigan, and S.M., E.E. and Ph.D. degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, all in electrical engineering. He is a fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and the Optical Society of America (OSA), and he is a member of the National Academy of Engineering. He has served as president of the IEEE Lasers and Electro-Optics Society, as Associate Editor of the Journal of Quantum Electronics and of Optics Letters, and as Chairman of several IEEE/OSA conferences. Dr. Leonberger holds over 20 patents and has been awarded the IEEE Quantum Electronics Award, the IEEE LEOS Millennium Medal and the UTC George Meade Medal.
