Sensor Electronic Technology, Inc. Announces Shipments of Optical Fibers Coupled to Deep Ultraviolet LEDs
Source/Type: Press Releases - As issued by company

April 12, 2005... Columbia, South Carolina--Sensor Electronic Technology, Inc. (SETI) announced the initial shipments of its new product based on the UV transparent optical fibers coupled (pigtailed) to deep ultraviolet light emitting diodes (DUV LEDs). These new components are designed to provide customers with new capabilities of delivering deep UV light to areas otherwise hardly accessible with directed light sources. Potential use of these light sources range from variety of analytical and biomedical instrumentation to medical applications such as right-on-the-spot analysis, disinfection and curing of tissue and/or organs inside the human body.

The company has developed packaging solution to couple optical fibers with DUV LEDs marketed under registered trademark UVTOP® with peak emission wavelengths as short as 255 nm. The first order for the new deep UV light sources with emission peak wavelength at 258 nm came from Special Technologies Laboratory operated by Bechtel Nevada for the U.S. Department of Energy. “We are pleased to announce expansion of our product portfolio to include DUV LED and optical fiber combination”, says Dr. Remis Gaska, President and CEO of SETI. “This enables us to provide new lighting solutions to our customers who need deep UV light sources for their applications”.

"We are very excited that SETI has been able to push these materials and devices to produce usable light at such short wavelengths", says Dr. Mark Morey from Special Technologies Laboratory.

SETI offers several packaging solutions for 255-365 nm LEDs including hermetic lamps with lambertian or narrow (+/- 10°) angular radiation profiles. The company has already shipped UVTOP® products to more than 70 customers worldwide. Support for the development of DUV LED technology at SETI came from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (program manager Dr. J. Carrano). About Sensor Electronic Technology, Inc.
