August 23, 2007... Group IV Semiconductor, the startup hoping to develop silicon-based light emitters,
received a very significant investment backing in early August. The funding
round was led by Garage Technology Ventures of Montreal, Canada and Applied
Ventures LLC, a subsidiary of process equipment maker Applied Materials Inc
of Santa Clara, CA, USA. The company’s existing investors are Khosla Ventures
of Menlo Park, CA, USA and Canada-based BDC Venture Capital.
The startup hopes to capitalize on the abundance of silicon with a thin nanofilm
layer for the production of single chip light-emitters. The goal is to produce
an extremely affordable, long lasting, and abundant light emitter that is much
less expensive than conventional LEDs. The company said that its silicon-based
light engines will be designed for use with today’s standard bulb-and-socket
fixtures. The company plans to tackle the retrofit market making their products
available for rapid adoption by end-users.
